At a length of approximately 140 miles, this region showcases Louisiana's conservation legacy with several public lands for recreational use. This region comprises two sections which include the Bodcau WMA-Minden Area and the Louisiana Trail.
Bodcau WMA-Minden Area:
For a total length of approximately 75 miles, this section starts at the northern terminus of the trail located at Ivan Lake Recreation Area, just north of Shreveport. From here, the trail winds its way through Bodcau Wildlife Management Area, the Town of Cotton Valley, the Caney Ranger District of Kisatchie National Forest, and the City of Minden before reaching the Town of Sibley. Camping inside Bodcau WMA is available at the Tom Merrill Recreation Area along with primitive campsites just 3 miles west of Cotton Valley. Currently no camping is available in Cotton Valley, but dispersed camping is available inside the property of Kisatchie National Forest, along with designated campsites at Beaver Dam Campground that includes restrooms and showers.
*** You MUST check in at Bodcau WMA prior to camping and hiking through this area.
Louisiana Trail:
The "Louisiana Trails" Rails-to-Trails corridor runs for just above 50 miles. This section passes you through the communities of Heflin, Jamestown, Castor, Ashland and Goldonna, providing you with several opportunities for resupply, hot food and camping options at the pavilions. You can primitive camp along the trail but must remain within the 50 ft. right-a-way area due to adjacent private property. The section enters the Winn Ranger District of Kisatchie, where they are greeted by the Gum Springs Trail, along with the Gum Springs Campground, and the birthplace of legendary Louisiana conservationist Caroline Dormon.
